Speaker: Barbara Phillips
Topic: Finding Nuggets in the Sand: What We Need to Know About Census Records, Part I
This presentation is Part I of a two-part presentation covering key points and often overlooked data in the census records. In this first part, we will review background information on census records. Part I will provide an in-depth look at why the census was required, the importance of the actual “Census day,” and how some small pieces of data can lead us to find information in other documents. We will see how national and world events often dictate the questions asked in each census. In this session, each census record from 1790 to 1860 will be discussed.
